Henry Fogel Consortium Commission Project
new orchestral commission from composer Osvaldo Golijov
WHAT
IS THE HENRY FOGEL
CONSORTIUM COMMISSION PROJECT?
As announced at the 2008
Conference in Denver, a consortium of League of American Orchestras
affiliated
symphony orchestras of all sizes is being built to support the creation
and
performance of a new work to honor Henry Fogel and his many years of
service to
the orchestra field, and especially his commitment to the future of
orchestras.
WHO
IS THE COMPOSER?
The six member Commission
Consortium Steering Committee is thrilled to announce that Osvaldo Golijov has accepted the
commission to write this work
honoring Henry.
The Steering Committee is made
up of:
Ryan Fleur, Executive
Director, Memphis Symphony Orchestra; Andrew
Berryhill, Executive
Director of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra;
Robert Rosoff, Executive
Director of the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra;
Darlene Dreyer, Executive
Director of the Paducah Symphony; Scott
Faulkner, Executive
Director of the Reno Chamber Orchestra; and Alan
Jordan, Executive
Director, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra.
Golijov is a recipient of the MacArthur
Fellowship, the Vilcek
Prize and Grammys among other awards and honors.
The committee and Henry feel very fortunate
that the idea for this project has captured the composer’s imagination. More information about
Golijov may be found
at www.osvaldogolijov.com
WHAT
AND WHEN IS THE
COMMISSION?
The work is to be 15 - 20
minutes in duration for double winds (allowing for doublings, for
instance alto
flute, English Horn, etc.) and
brass, two
percussionists (including timpani), keyboard, harp and strings.
The new work will have its
world premiere at the Memphis Symphony orchestra during September 2010.
WHAT
ARE THE DETAILS OF THE
CONSORTIUM?
The Steering Committee is seeking orchestras from among
any and all League member orchestras to participate in this consortium. The project is designed to
celebrate the
multiplicity of orchestras and their future, as Henry has been doing
his entire
career.
The deadline for joining the
consortium is 1 March 2009 and the first 35 orchestras to join will be
eligible
for some special early bird benefits.
The full group of consortium members of record as of
1 March 2009 will
be part of the premiering group during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
The World Premiere will be
with the Memphis Symphony
Orchestra, after which any orchestra in the consortium will be free to
perform
the work during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
At the end of the 2011-12 season, the work
will be available for performance by orchestras who were not consortium
members.
